Lauren Jackson
Shootaround with Storm Power Forward/Center

Originally published August 16, 2010 at 6:59 PM | Page modified August 17, 2010 at 4:41 PM

Storm center Lauren Jackson talks about her team's recent losses, gives us an Aussie lesson and brags about her dog, William.

Today, Lauren Jackson talks with Seattle Times Sports Editor Don Shelton about four recent losses and brags about her dog, William.

Question: Since we talked last, you've lost four games. Does that worry you?

LJ: We went into the games recently on the road with a different mind-set, in terms of getting the starters some rest before the playoff run begins. As a competitor, it never sits well losing to anyone regardless of the situation, so the flights and the locker-room experience definitely wasn't what I would refer to as optimum. However, we have three big games coming up, and the girls and myself are looking to get back to form very quickly. ... I have a very good feeling about this season and my teammates. We know what we are up against and we are ready to battle!

Q: Are you and the Storm into practical jokes? Whose the best practical jokester on the team and what's the best one anyone's ever pulled?

LJ: Um, some of the girls are practical jokers, Sue (Bird), in particular, has a fun-loving spirit, so there are always jokes and laughter bellowing somewhere in the Storm camp. Adia Barnes (ex-teammate who does the radio broadcast) carries a camera around with her on the road and manages to film people sleeping awkwardly on airplanes, which I personally think is quite cruel but as long as it's not me, I will have a giggle. ... Shadyyyyy!

Q: What's the coolest Aussie animal?

LJ: My dog, William. He's a pit bull-staffi cross. He's a beautiful, beautiful boy. And I miss him. He's an athlete. He can jump. He's very magical. Houdini we call him. He goes to kennels when my mom and dad have to go on trips, but he gets over their three-meter fences. He'll come to their front door and sit there and go, "Ha! Ha! I tricked you! I'm here!"

Q: I don't want to brag, but my two Beagles aren't too shabby either. Willie can shake hands, roll over and tap my beer glass three times for a drink. What's the best trick William knows? Who wins smartest dog competition, Willie or William?

LJ: William is flat-out the smartest dog around. When he isn't being paid attention he starts doing tricks so we notice him. His favorite trick is called "Slithery" or "Snakey," and basically what he does is snake across the floor with his back legs flat on the ground, and he crawls on his front legs. It's an on-demand trick now and it is so cute! Ohhh, I miss my baby!

Q: What are three Aussie words an American wouldn't understand — and can you toss in a favorite Aussie curse word I can put in the newspaper?

LJ: Dunny — toilet. Cobber — mate. "How you doin', cobber?" My grandfather calls my brother that all the time. Grog, as in alcohol. And bugger. I always say bugger.

Q: Now can you use all four in a sentence involving you and Sue Bird?

LJ: (Laughs). OK, let me give it a shot. "Sue, me cobber, and I went out for some grog last night, I went to the dunny and dropped me mobile in the loo and all I could say was bugger!" Not very intelligent or witty, but I got it done!

I just enjoy listening to music. I'm studying for my degree in gender studies and humanities and diploma in property, so I study to escape. That keeps me focused on things other than basketball.

I have a dog named William. He's a bit of a mongrel - cross pitbull and labrador. He's beautiful. He's an angel. He's so athletic. He's like the Houdini dog. He can jump over eight-foot fences. He'll show up and say, 'Hey, I tricked you again!'

LJ, which Western Conference opponent do you think will be most dangerous come playoff time?
Thursday June 3, 2010 2:53 MG

Lauren Jackson:
That would be probably Phoenix, L.A. and Minnesota. I think it's going to be a tough year. The league is very good. We've just got to keep getting better and hopefully nobody will bother us.

  Thursday June 3, 2010 2:54 Stormin Steve
2:55
Lauren Jackson:
I want Boston to win. I'm a bit of a Boston fan for some reason. I think it's because I have a little bit of Irish blood. And I really love Ray Allen. He     was so nice. He treated all of us very respectfully when he played here. Also Rondo, he's just blown me away. He's playing so well. And the little guy from Seattle, Nate Robinson.

I played outdoors in Brazil in 1997, maybe? It was with the Australian National Team and we played in Rio de Janeiro at Copacabana Beach. It was the middle of the afternoon and it was boiling hot. I had sunscreen all over me. Then, after the game, we went surfing, so it was a lot of fun.

LAUREN: What's it like to have to share the Queen of Seattle Sports title with a Husky named LAWRIE for a while? Could you hit her fastball? Could she give you a good game of H-O-R-S-E?

She's amazing. I think she's great. We're both foreigners and we're the queens of Seattle. That's funny!

How much have injuries affected your overall career and continual psyche? I still remember the criticism you took for not playing because of your injured ankle (I think it was), and how frustrating that must've been to endure that.

3:01
Lauren Jackson:
Fortunately, I'm one of those people who never really dwells on the past. I'm very much an "in the moment" sort of person, so I don't think it's affected me at all. When I'm in it, it's hard, but when I'm out of it it's like it never happened.

Thursday June 3, 2010 3:03 Stormin Steve

3:04
Lauren Jackson:
I think Brian just knows how to deal with people. I think that's his best quality, personally, because he knows how to treat people individually.     Obviously he knows a lot about the game, so he knows how to coach us. He has the right philosophy about defense. I'm definitely in his corner, so to speak.

Lauren Jackson:
There's so many players that impact you differently on the court. I find if I go out with a fairly free headspace and not really thinking about what someone else or another team can do to me, I'm better. I think I'm the only person who can really stop me. When I'm on, I'm on.

Hey Loz. AFL or League? And who's your team?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:05 Manda

3:06
Lauren Jackson:
I love rugby league and I also love AFL (Aussie-rules football). I always get home at the end of the season for the finals of both, and I love them both. I'm the ambassador for the Sydney Swans in AFL and West Tigers. My grandfather used to play for West.

I'm probably more like my mom attitude-wise and physically more like my dad. My dad and I have the exact same body. He's a little bit bigger than me now, obviously, but we have the exact same fingers, limbs, toes.

Lauren Jackson:
Yes, I do. I think as a professional athlete, it would be extremely special to play out my career in Seattle. It's my home here. I spend more time here than Australia and I love it. I love what the city has done for me personally and professionally. I love the water, too. And I love the Aussie pub, Kangaroo and Kiwi.

I reckon a good vegimite sandwich. I get care packs sent to me. I can make my room, wherever I am, into a very homey space wherever I am. But there's no turning Russia into home, no matter what.

I'm actually really shy. When people come up to me and I'm caught off guard, I get really shy. I take a step back. It's weird. It doesn't matter who you are. I feel like in Australia, because I'm huge height-wise, everyone knows who I am. Here, it's occasional. I kind of get caught off guard a little more. In Australia, it's usually kids and not adults. I'm recognized more in Seattle now than I used to be.

No, never. The only person I've asked for an autograph was Meryl Streep. I asked for my mother. I was so scared when I asked her. She was nice. What an amazing woman. I was so proud.

We're playing well. We all get along well, we're all great friends, so I would say that our chemistry is great. I think that the years of playing together - our starters particularly under Brian - is starting to pay off a little bit. I just hope that we continue getting better. I want to win another championship.

Your matchups with Lisa Leslie were always wonderfully hyped in the media. How much was hype? And are there players now with whom you have relationships that might not be painted correctly by sports writers but about which you'd like to set the story straight?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:17 Todd

3:18
Lauren Jackson:
We definitely had a huge rivalry, but since she's retired I have a lot of respect for her and I'm not afraid to say that now. I think that got lost in the rivalry, how much respect I do have for her and how much she did for women's basketball. I think she was an amazing ambassador for the WNBA and women in general. I didn't mean to pull her hair out at the 2000 Olympics (even though she thinks I did).

You and Sue have been a great duo for a long time, what has it been like playing with her all these years?
  Thursday June 3, 2010 3:18 Tony

Lauren Jackson:
Sue is one of my best friends, so being able to play with her and have the time to develop this relationship has been incredible. I get to play with her in Europe as well. You don't get a lot of these opportunities in basketball, so I think I've been very fortunate to land here in Seattle. To get to play with Sue has been icing on the cake.

Thursday June 3, 2010 3:19 Different Guest

Lauren Jackson:
I thought it was a huge blow for the city. I think that the NBA, the league itself is in its own world. The Sonics definitely had a legacy here. It was a shame to see them go. That was one of the teams I would watch at home as a kid. To see them go like that was really distressing. Hopefully they get another here, but the Sonics leaving was definitely very sad.

What's your mindset like going into a game? As you've gotten older, have you found yourself dealing with pressure differently?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:23 MG

Lauren Jackson:
As I've gotten older, I'm not so stressed about playing. I think it comes so much more naturally. I need to have a very free headspace when I play basketball. Otherwise, if I'm focused too much on things I have or haven't been working on, it messes me up. I need to be loose and very free. I feel like that's how I am, whether I'm on the court or off the court.

I would say there are definitely elements of that in certain parts of Australia. Abby Bishop would be able to tell you more about that, but I come from the South and we don't really have big fat crocodiles in the South. Lauren Jackson:
I didn't watch it because of the time difference, but I was very happy for the girls. It was a horrible time that everyone went through and I'm just happy at the outcome. They rightfully deserved to be the best in Europe, as Shabtai would have loved.

Have you ever had a problem with teammates not understanding what you're saying because you've used certain words or phrasings?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:37 Vicki
3:37
Lauren Jackson:
Yes. All the time. I honestly can't understand what my teammates are saying ever. I struggle with it. Especially when calling plays and things like that on the court. I cannot for the life of me understand sometimes. Everyone gets so frustrated, but I honestly cannot hear them.

Do you think any WNBA player could legitimately make an NBA roster?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:41 Rich
3:42
Lauren Jackson:
Yeah, I do. Especially the girls in the league that can shoot the ball really well from outside. Physically, it would be very difficult for a player in     our league to match what they can do for obvious reasons. But I think players who can pass the ball really well, make good decisions and can     shoot it have a chance to be one of the last players on the roster.

Do you ever hate being so tall?
Thursday June 3, 2010 3:42 Jenny
3:43
Lauren Jackson:
Never. When you grow up being a big kid, it just becomes normal. I was in a very big family, so it was never like I was the odd one out. I've always been treated really respectfully in my home. I started getting good at basketball at a very young age, so people definitely started respecting me. I've never not loved being my height. I'm very fortunate.

Sue Bird makes me laugh. She does things that have me cracking up in practice. I can't actually think of one thing, but she had me roaring today in practice. My uncle tells amazing jokes, so he makes me laugh too. There's nothing like a good laugh.

Madison Square Garden, because every time I go there it takes me back to being a kid. You hear about these arenas growing up. That might be the most famous arena in the world. It's just so intimidating because of the hype.

Lauren Jackson:
Yeah, she was taller than me. Anne worked really hard on getting me better. She worked after practice with me in the post. She was a great motivator. It was great playing under Anne.

Probably just the professionalism. I don't think you can really replicate that anywhere in the world other than here. The desire to win, to be playing the best players in the world day in and day out, it's insane. It doesn't work like that anywhere else.

 Thursday June 3, 2010 3:55 Guest

Lauren Jackson:
There are just moments when KeyArena gets so loud you can't hear yourself think. I think that hinders the other team but helps us because we know that everyone in that stadium is pulling for us. The atmosphere there, it is something that I will never experience anywhere else in the world. I just love it here. I've got lovely things to say about Seattle and KeyArena. It's probably going to be the fondest thing about my career, looking back on it when I retire, is my time here.
